The Victor New Carbonshuttle NCS PRO Shuttlecock utilises a composite carbon fibre build. Featuring a Professional Aerodynamic Synthetic Feather design with three added air holes, the NCS Pro delivers steadier flight and more natural spin. Combined with a composite carbon fiber stem, it ensures precise weight balance and delivers more responsive net play and greater maneuverability. alongside aerodynamic synthetic material feathers known for high stiffness, light weight, and resistance to tearing.

To produce this unique shuttlecock, Victor has used advanced computer analysis, mechanics simulation and weight distribution alongside hundreds of tests. The result of this is the NCS, a shuttle that achieves the perfect balance in synthetic shuttlecock performance. The innovative design of the NCS has acquired patents in multiple countries across Europe, Asia and America.

The NCS delivers solid hits, a stable flight trajectory, and is also exceptionally durable. The flight trajectory, hitting feel and weight of the shuttle closely resemble a traditional, natural feather shuttlecock, but professional testing has shown that the NCS has the potential to withstand rallies of over 100 mid-to-long-range shots, proving its superior durability when compared to a feather shuttle.

BUYING GUIDE

So you want to make the most out of playing badminton but there's a ton of badminton shuttles / shuttlecocks out there to choose from, all made from different materials and grades. So how do you decide? Don't panic, here at Badminton HQ, we've outlined everything you need to know in order make the correct choice.

There are 3 main factors when deciding what badminton shuttlecocks to buy:

  1. Type of shuttlecock you want
  2. The speed of badminton shuttlecock – based upon the conditions where they'll be played in
  3. Standard and level of badminton play they're intended for
  4. Price and durability - leading to overall value for money
Example Badminton Feather Shuttlecocks

When looking on our product pages, for Badminton Shuttlecocks look for the 4 key areas we list:

  1. Shuttle Flight Path Quality – How close to the ideal shuttle flight path it flies.
  2. Shuttle Consistency – How accurately the shuttle lands in the same spot when hit in the same way.
  3. Shuttlecock Durability – How long it lasts before it needs to be replaced.
  4. Playing Level: Recreational, Training, Club, Match, Tournament or Senior Tournament.

Types of Shuttlecocks:

There are 3 types of Badminton Shuttlecocks:

  1. Feather Shuttlecocks
  2. Plastic/Synthetic Shuttlecocks
  3. Hybrid Shuttlecocks

Feather Shuttlecocks - key considerations:

  • Generally used by intermediate to professional level players.
  • Easier to control than nylon shuttles - net spin and slice can also be achieved
  • Made from duck or goose feathers, with goose favoured by elite players.
  • Good to excellent shuttle flight.
  • Not recommended for beginners as poor technique and timing can break the feathers quickly.
  • Low durability in comparison to nylon shuttles
  • In order to help durability it's recommended they're stored in a generally humid environment, so that the feather don't get brittle and dry, leading to quicker breakage

Plastic Shuttlecocks:

  • Used mainly by beginner, recreational and lower-level club players.
  • Plastic shuttlecocks are made from nylon material
  • Fast flight - plastic shuttles generally decelerate slower than feathers, usually resulting in a faster paced game with less control or touch play.
  • Fantastic durability. Plastic shuttles last for a long time, sometimes up to 100 games before wearing out

Hybrid Shuttlecocks:

  • A combination of plastic and feather.
  • As a more recent development there very few currently available in the UK. The most established hybrid is the Kawasaki King Kong 500 Hybrid
  • The end feathers are duck/goose feathers, whilst the frame of the shuttle is synthetic.
  • Longer durability than conventional feathers.
  • Cheaper than most full feather shuttlecocks due to lower manufacturing costs.
  • Inferior flight path and control when compared to a high grade full-feather shuttlecock

Badminton Shuttle Flight

Badminton Shuttlecock Speeds:

If you're based in the UK, it's likely that speed 78 (Yonex speed 3) will be the best choice for you. Speed 78 is by far the most popular shuttlecock speed in this region; however, if you're unsure, read on and we'll explain shuttle speeds in more detail.

Choosing the correct speed of shuttle is crucial so that the shuttlecock flies the appropriate length of the court from a standard degree of force.

In regular conditions a slow shuttle speed will mean the shuttle will fall short of a standard length and decelerate more quickly. As you may expect, a fast shuttle speed will travel further and at a faster speed.

Badminton shuttlecocks are classified into speed categories of 75-79. The smaller the number, the slower the shuttlecock flies. Speeds 75 are 76 are less common, especially in the UK and the rest of Europe.

The speed of a badminton shuttlecock is affected by 3 factors:

  1. Temperature
  2. Altitude
  3. Humidity of the Environment

The result of this means that depending upon where you are in the world, the speed of the shuttle is significantly affected.

So how can I choose?

Standard and Level of Badminton Play:

As a general rule there's considered to be 6 levels of badminton play:

  1. Recreational
  2. Training
  3. Club
  4. Match
  5. Tournament
  6. Professional Senior Tournament

We've listed each badminton shuttle on our site to state what preferred level of play the shuttle is designed for.

The most popular badminton shuttlecock in the UK is the Yonex Aerosena AS30 Speed 78. These are used by higher level clubs, in tournaments and for matches, due to it's well known quality. Another very popular shuttle is the Victor Gold Champion, which is similar to the Yonex AS30 or AS40 in terms of consistency and durability.

Here's some of our Badminton HQ recommendations based upon your playing level:

Price and Durability, leading to overall value for money:
This is the final and often most important deciding factor, particularly if you're a club or a coach, using high quantities of feather shuttles.

Our advice is to take a look at the key graph features we show on the individual product pages, and in particular - Shuttlecock Durability.

Other Tips to help the shuttle last longer:

  • Purchase a Humidome. This fits at the end of a shuttle tub and humidifies the shuttles
  • Store the shuttles within a humid environment, above a water tray
  • If the above isn't possible, make sure you seal the shuttle tubes immediately after use, and store in an environment where the temperature is kept relatively low, so as to avoid moisture leaving the shuttles due to higher temperatures

Feather like feeling but no durability

We went through 5 shuttles in an hour. Doesn’t last at all. Flies well and feels like feather but wont buy again.

Good for club use and will last 4 times longer

Good for club use and will last 4 times longer than various feather alternatives since AS-30s became too expensive. Drives and smash are pretty similar but these sometimes feel heavier for clears and tight net shots which must be flight path as they are identical weight. Also clears that would be left to drop out the back with a feather tend to drop a foot shorter with hybrids so judgement adjustment also needed. Get used to it though, this is where the sport is heading...

Shuttles

Tried the shuttles for the first time and found they were good, flew fine, easily controlled for different shots. Unfortunately we are an older group, playing for pleasure, and of the 12 I was given only 4 have survived in to week 3. This makes them too costly to continue in our situation.

Badminton HQ delivered again

I’m a returning customer, the service is first class. The website is particularly helpful when I was choosing my badminton shoes, the various features are shown on sliding scales from 0-100% this made it easier to choose the right shoes for me.
All in all a great company to do business with.

A decent alternative to feathers

They have a heavier feel than a feather shuttle but are perfectly playable - far better than a traditional plastic shuttle … and last about twice as long as the Yehlex Championship shuttles we normally use.

Little toughies

These , we think , are very good, they seem to fly just as well as the feathers we are used to playing with. They appear to be very durable outlasting the feathers easily. There is a sense that they are not the same but nobody can quite put their finger on exactly what it is . The price is better than the feathers but not by a massive amount. We intend to continue using them.

Great for practice

Better than Nylon, not as good as feather. Been playing around two years with nylon and decided to move to feather, found they don't last as long. Discovered this hybrid version. Seem to be more robust with a better flight than nylon but not identical to feather. Great for practice - we have bought more so must be good!

C
Cade Catalano
NCS Pro

Very nice for the price. We are moving in a good direction to have a decent shuttlecock that is easier to produce! Still not as good as a AS-30 but much better than regular plastics. Would buy more but they need to stay priced lower than real feathers.

Beginner friendly

While the price tag might put you off they are very durable and the only problem is me and my friends hit the feathers and it gets stuck, but honestly we aren’t that good

j
james lee
Cheaper than feathers and almost the same in use.

We started using NCS last year, and overall we've been very happy with them. Having the Pro for only a few days, it's too soon to say if they're an improvement. We play socially, but some members play in league teams, so the NCS means less change in playing style. We had previously been playing with plastics, simply to keep the costs down. The NCS seem to be a very nice compromise for feel and cost.

Mr Robert Cereda
Best synthetic however...

These shuttles are very good and nearly at feather standard, however:
1. They do seem slightly slower than the Yonex AS20 i.e. you have to hit them really hard to clear back to back court
2. Although they are more robust in general than feather, when they do break a "feather" they are unusable, whereas feather you can keep going with as long as there are no major issues. For this reason, for people with big smashes they are less robust than feather. However, they would be perfect for most club sessions.
3. Until leagues start allowing these then it is difficult to justify using them for practice
