The Yonex Astrox 77 Play Badminton Racket is an excellent entry point into the Astrox family, designed for beginner to intermediate players who want to develop an attacking style of play without the demands of a professional-level frame. Head-heavy in balance with a hi-flex shaft and a lightweight 4U (83g) build, it makes powerful smashes and steep-angled clears genuinely accessible — giving you the feel of the Astrox range at a fraction of the cost of the 77 Pro.

The head-heavy balance adds momentum to your swing, helping you generate stronger smashes and deeper clears from the rearcourt whether you're playing singles or doubles. The hi-flex shaft is particularly well-suited to players still developing their timing and technique — it bends on the backswing to store energy and snaps back on contact to assist power generation, meaning you don't need a fast or aggressive swing to hit with real pace. The frame is also built 10mm longer than standard, which increases shuttle hold time and gives you more leverage on attacking shots.

Supporting string tension of up to 28 lbs, the Astrox 77 Play has enough range to grow with you as your game develops. String it lower (around 20–22 lbs) for maximum power assistance as a beginner, and increase tension as your technique and timing improve for greater control and snap.

Isometric™ - Yonex's signature square frame shape increases the sweet spot by 7% compared to a conventional round frame, delivering greater forgiveness and consistency on off-centre hits — a key advantage for players still developing accuracy.

Rotational Generator System - By applying counterbalance theory, weight is distributed throughout the grip end, frame top and joint for maximum control. This allows smooth, rapid transitions between shots without losing momentum or rhythm during rallies.

Badminton Rackets Buying Guide

The key question to ask firstly is what style of player are you, or what type of player do you want to become?

  1. Power Attacking
  2. All Round
  3. Fast Reactions to Rallies
  4. Control and Touch, by moving players around the court to create space

As a general guide for your playing style below is the kind of racket you'll want to look at purchasing:

In simple terms is means this:
Player with Explosive Backswing Hitting = Stiffer Shaft needed as it'll unload faster for more power.
Player with Slower Backswing Hitting = More Flexible Shaft needed so that it'll unload fully at impact.

If you're still unsure what to choose for yourself, we'd recommend going for a medium flex badminton racket to minimise the chances of choosing incorrectly what's right for you.

Weight:

Weight can make a real difference to reaction speeds, and power behind the hit of a shuttle. Too light a racket and it won't go far or powerful enough. However too heavy a racket and you'll find you'll be reacting too slow in fast flat rallies, where reaction speed is everything.:

Most rackets are weighted around 3U (85-89g) or 4U (80-84g), this is because it's a good weight balance for players to hit hard and also be able to react fast too.:

Typically singles players will use heavier rackets 3U (85-89g), this provides the player with more stability and accuracy, with a little more weight for power behind it, without compromising on racket speed too much, as quick racket head speed isn't needed as much in the singles game:

Doubles players however will usually want lighter rackets, the most popular weight for this being 4U (80-84g), this is because the Badminton Racket will offer more speed and quicker reactions in around the net and for defence against smashes.:

Racket Strings Used & Tension:

Again like the grip, this is customisable on any racket. However do look out for racket tension ranges on the product as this could potentially limit your ability to have the racket strung at a desired tension.:

This has helped my smash for sure. Faster with a tighter angle. Used it first time last week and won half my doubles games! Which is not normal! Grip felt a bit narrow at first but soon got used to it. Feel however I need to redo the tape as it feels a bit loose. Happy so far.

Bought these rackets to start playing Badmington after many years out the game. Didn’t want to go for a cheap racket but also not too expensive as it might be a passing fad. The racket is a lovely colour. Well made. Well strung and so far a good weight and feel about it. Was down as a racket for an intermediate player and I would say that’s probably about right. Cost was a touch over the amount I really wanted to pay but there was really not much choice for around £30. Either under £20 or above £60. So I went for a more expensive racket. Happy with the purchase. But could do with a better range for the intermediate players
